Description:

Description: Epiphytic shrub; mature branches and twigs terete, striate, glabrous, tan to reddish-brown, sometimes glaucous. Leaves oblong, elliptic, or ovate-elliptic, (7-)10-14(-16) x (3-)4-6 cm, basally rounded, obtuse, or subtruncate, apically long-acuminate or abruptly short-acuminate, glabrous; 5(-7)-plinerved, midrib inconspicuously thickened and raised through proximal 0.7-1.5 cm otherwise impressed above and raised beneath, lateral nerves slightly impressed above but raised and prominent beneath, veinlets slightly raised but obsucure on both surfaces; petioles terete, rugose, striate, (4-)7-10(-14) mm long and 2-2.5 mm diam., sparsely pilose when young but glabrous at maturity. Inflorescence 15-25-flowered; rachis bluntly angled, smooth or slightly striate, glabrous, (2.5-)7-9 cm long and 2-4 mm diam.; floral bracts smooth, elliptic, 15-20 x 8-10 mm, basally obtuse, apically rounded to obtuse, glabrous, reddish; pedicels swollen distally, striate, glabrous 8-10 mm long and 1 m diam. at anthesis, lengthening to 17 mm after anthesis; bracteoles basal, ovate-lanceolate, 1.5 x 0.75 mm, apically acute, glandular-callose marginally and distal half. Flowers: calyx glabrous, 5 mm long; hypanthium short-cylindric, coarsely ribbed, 1.5 mm long, strongly apophysate basally; limb erecto-patent to slightly campanulate, rugose, 3.5 mm long; lobes broadly triangular to somewhat ovate-apiculate, 1 mm long, erect after anthesis, completely glandular-callose; sinuses obtuse; corolla slightly narrowed at base and throat, 18-20 mm long and 4.5 mm diam., glabrous, pink (fide type), lobes triangular or oblong, obtuse, 1 mm long, tips glandular-callose; stamens 18.5-19 mm long; filaments pilose distal half, alternately ca. 2 mm and 4 mm long; anthers alternately ca. 18 mm and 16 mm long; thecae 5.5-6.5 m long; style ca. 19 mm long. Berry 11-12 mm diam.

Distribution: Endemic to Cerro Pirre (Darién Prov.), Panama, where it is found in the lower montane rain forest or cloud forest, at elevations of 700-1400 m. Flowering specimens have been collected in April and December, and fruits in April and August. Rare and endangered.

Type: Panama. Darién: Cerro Pirre, 11 Apr 1967 (fl), Bristan 587 (holotype: DUKE, photo NY neg. 9248; isotype: MO).
