Description:

Description: Epiphytic shrub; mature branches subterete, bluntly angled, glabrous, brown. Leaves elliptic- or ovate-lanceolate, (9.5-)13-16 x 4-7 cm, basally obtuse or rounded, apically short or long but broadly acuminate, nitid, glabrous, margins slightly revolute; 3(-5)-plinerved, the nerves arising from near the base, the midrib thickened and raised through the proximal 1-1.5 cm but impressed distally above, raised beneath, the inner pair of lateral veins plane or weakly impressed above and raised beneath, the veinlets reticulate and slightly raised on both surfaces; petioles subterete, rugose, (10-)15-17 mm long and 2-3 mm in diam., glabrous, glaucous. Inflorescence viscid, 20-25-flowered, the lowest 3-4 floral bracts and 3.5-5 cm of rachis sterile; rachis 12-15 cm long and 3-3.5 mm diam., bluntly angled, glabrous but with scattered globular glands; floral bracts conspicuously striate, oblong, 7-11 x 5-6 mm, basally truncate, apically rounded, each margin with 10-20 angular or globular sessile glands, some of these often caducous; pedicels subterete, glabrous, 19-20 mm long and 1-1.2 mm in diam., "purple," provided at the distal tip with 6-8 flesh-colored ovoid-angular short-stipitate glands each less than 0.5 mm in diam.; bracteoles subopposite, located midway along and continuous (not articulate) with the pedicel, ovate, 1.5 m long and ca. 1 mm broad at the base, the tip completely glandular-callose and with 1-2 pairs globular glands below tip which may fuse. Flowers: calyx glabrous, 6-7 m long; hypanthium campanulate, 5(weakly 10)-ribbed, 2 mm long, basally apophysate with the rim undulate and turned upward, "purple"; limb spreading, noticeably constricted at the base, 3-4 mm long, "green"; lobes triangular, obtuse, 1 mm long and ca. 3 mm wide at the base, erect after anthesis, completely glandular-callose without and onto the limb, only the margins callose wihtin; sinuses flat or broadly rounded; corolla cylindric but conspicuously inflated the distal 1/4, glabrous, 41-46 mm long and 6 mm diam., "waxy red," the lobes triangular, obtuse, 2-3.5 mm long; stamens equal, 34-36 mm long; filaments pilose along the margins and inner surfaces, alternately 1-2 mm and 5-6 mm long; anthers alternately 33-35 mm and 29-31 mm long; thecae 5-6.5 mm long; tubules apically dehiscent by short clefts ca. 2-3 mm long with ragged and slightly flaring margins; style sigmoid, 42-45 mm long. Berry not seen.

Distribution: Endemic to Panama and known only from the type locality, where it grows as a pendent epiphyte in very wet cloud forest or premontane rain forest at elevations of 600-1300 m.

Conservation Status: Rare and endangered.

Type: Panama. Coclé: Nr. sawmill 8 km N of El Copé (28 km NW of Penonome), 600-700 m, 9 Jan 1977 (fl), Maas et al. 2774 (holotype, U, photo NY neg. 10578).
