Description:
Description: Epiphytic, lianoid shrub; stem terete to bluntly angled, striate, nitid, glabrous; bark peeling off in thin strips; twigs subterete, complanate, striate, moderately pilose with short, white hairs. Leaves coriaceous, falcate, narrowly ovate-lanceolate, (9-)12-16 x (1.5-)2-2.5 cm, base rounded or obtuse, apex long-acuminate, margin entire, essentially glabrous on both surfaces; 3-5-plinerved from near the base, midrib impressed above and raised beneath, weakly pilose proximally beneath, lateral nerves plane to slightly raised on both surfaces, obscure above but ± conspicuous beneath, reticulate veinlets slightly raised but obscure on both surfaces; petiole terete, rugose, weakly canaliculate above, ca. 4-5 mm long and ca. 1 mm diam., densely pilose with short, white hairs. Inflorescence axillary, solitary, pendent, long-racemose, 3-4-flowered (?); rachis subterete to bluntly complanate, weakly striate, flexuous distally, 9-16.5 (-25 fide label) cm long, the flowers restricted to the distal few centimeters, short-pilose; floral bract persistent, acicular, 3-4 mm long, densely pilose with short, white hairs; pedicel terete, striate, 25-35 mm long, densely pilose with short, white hairs; bracteoles basal, linear-lanceolate, long-acuminate, 2-2.5 mm long, short-pilose. Flowers with calyx 8-11 mm long; hypanthium cylindric-turbinate, bluntly 5-angled, 1.8-2 mm long, short-pilose; limb wide-spreading, deeply lobed, 6-9 mm long, pilose; lobes ovate, long-acuminate, 5.5-8 mm long, venation conspicuously striate, weakly pilose; sinuses acute; corolla cylindric, not ventricose at base, carnose, 51-55 mm long and ca. 10 mm diam. near base, glabrous, pink (fide label), the lobes lanceolate, long-acuminate, 16-19 mm long, purple (fide label); stamen equal, about equalling corolla in overal length, 44-46 mm long; filaments distinct (or slightly coherent), ca. 5 mm long, glabrous; anthers 41-43 mm long; thecae ca. 7 mm long; tubules 34-35 mm long, dehiscing by oblique, slightly flaring clefts, 0.8-1 mm long; style ca. 50 mm long, glabrous. Berry not seen.
Distribution: Endemic to Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe), and known only from two collections; premontane wet forest at 930-1000 m altitude. Rare and probably endangered.
Type: Ecuador. Zamora-Chinchipe: Cordillera del Cóndor, Cantón Nangaritza, Río Nangaritza, Shaime, confluence of Nangaritza and Numpatakaime rivers, 1000 m, 7 Dec 1990 (fl), Neill 9594 (holotype, QCNE; isotype, MO).
