Description:

Description: Epiphytic shrub; stem terete to subterete, sometimes bluntly angled, striate, short-pilose, glabrate; twigs subterete, complanate, bluntly to sharply angled, striate, moderately short-pilose with white hairs. Leaves coriaceous, ovate, ovate-elliptic, rarely oblong-ovate, 2-3.5 x 1-1.7 cm, base rounded, subcordate, apex acute, obtuse, or narrowly rounded, margin entire, slightly thickened, and slightly revolute, sparsely but conspicuously short-pilose along edge of lamina and onto the margin on both surfaces, and also at base of midrib beneath, glabrate, also bearing deciduous, minute, glandular fimbriae on both surfaces; 3(5)-plinerved from the base, midrib plane or usually raised above and conspicuously raised beneath, lateral nerves and reticulate veinlets conspicuously raised above and slightly raised but inconspicuous beneath, sometimes only midrib noticeable beneath; petiole subterete, flattened above, rugose, 1.7-3.3 mm long, densely short-pilose, glabrate. Inflorescence axillary, racemose, 7-20-flowered; rachis subterete, sharply angled, 1-2.5 cm long, glabrous; floral bract flat not ribbed, oblong to oblanceolate, rounded, 12-15 x 3-7 mm, eglandular, ciliate distally, red (fide label); pedicel subterete, ribbed, 6-8 mm long, eglandular, glabrous; bracteoles basal, oblong-elliptic, rounded to acute, 2-3(-5) mm long, margin densely and deciduously glandular-fimbriate. Flowers with calyx 4-5 mm long; hypanthium cylindric, ribbed, 1.5-1.6 mm long, base broadly apophysate with the margin flaring, undulate to lobed, and short-pilose; limb campanulate-spreading, 2.4-2.5 mm long, glabrous; lobes oblong-ovate, apiculate, ca. 1 mm long, margin lacerate-glandular, erect after anthesis; sinuses acute; corolla cylindric, 9-10 mm long and ca. 3.5 mm diam., red to vermillion (fide label), glabrous, the lobes ovate, acute, ca. 1 mm long, white; stamens equal overall, 8-8.5 mm long; filaments distinct, alternately ca. 3.5 mm and 1.5 mm long, glabrous; anthers alternately ca. 6.3 mm and 7.5 mm long; thecae alternately ca. 3 mm and 2.5 mm long; tubules alternately ca. 3.5 mm and 5 mm long; style slightly exserted, glabrous. Berry not seen.

Distribution: Endemic to extreme NW Panama (Bocas del Toro Prov.) and known from only four collections, at elevations of 2400-2900 m.

Conservation Status: Rare and probably endangered.
