Description:

An enormous tree (for a rhododendron). Flowers white, fragrant. Leaves quite glabrous, in pseudo-whorls at the ends of the shoots. Leaves and flowers glabrous throughout. Flowers white here, in Burma pinkish purple, both forms with a small pale yellow flash. Bark thin and papery, a warm red like a Scots Pine. One trunk measured 8.5 ft. in girth a little above the ground, just below where it split into two. Height 50 ft. or more, many in full bloom. On flowering trees young leaves not fully developed; they, too, are quite glabrous.
