Discussion:

Type. VENEZUELA. Territorio Amazonas: Summit, Cerro de la Neblina, Rio Yatua, upper Cañon Grande, 1900 m alt, 11 Dec 1957; vine climbing shrubs to 2-4 m high; flowers red; Maguire, Wurdack & C. K. Maguire 42350 (holotype NY). Paratypes. VENEZUELA. Territorio Amazonas: Summit, Cerro de la Nebhna, Rio Yatua, forest at northwest head of Cañon Grande, 2000 m alt, 8-9 Dec 1957, Maguire, Wurdack & Maguire 42328; Cerro de la Neblina, headwaters of Cañon Grande, southeastern portion, 1900 m alt, 16-17 Oct 1970, Steyermark 104025. In this taxon it is difficult to assign the nature of the anther pores to A. C. Smith's categories. Since the pores begin at the apex and open downward in the form of an oblong-elliptic aperture 0.6-1 mm long, they might be described as terminal, but on the other hand it could be argued that they form an oblique cleft on the anther. Thus, depending upon where one places the type of anther pore in Smith's key to the species of Orthaea, the present taxon would fall either near O. engleriana Hoer. or to O. pinnatinervia Mansf. (both from Peru). From both of these taxa, O. wurdackii differs in the smaller leaves with shorter, obtusely acuminate apices. Moreover, from O. engleriana it may be further distinguished by the glabrous pedicels and calyx tube, and from O. pinnatinervia in the suborbicular-ovate bracteoles, non-apophysate calyx tube, non-apiculate calyx lobes, and fewer-flowered inflorescences.
