Description:

Species Description - Rhizome short- to moderately creeping, to 4 mm diam.; rhizome scales linear, reddish-orange, 8 mm long, with long hair-teeth; phyllo-podia inconspicuous or lacking; fronds clumped to slightly spaced, 24-30 cm long, 2.0-4.2 cm wide; stipe ½ the frond length, with scales broad, spreading, orange, ca. 2 mm long, with long hair-teeth; blade narrowly elliptic, subcoriaceous, apex obtuse, base broadly cuneate; veins obscure, free, simple or once-forked, ca. 1.5 mm apart, at 60-70° angle; hydathodes lacking; blade scales on upper surface white, lanceolate, with long hair-teeth, on lower surface orange and overlapping; fertile fronds slightly longer than the sterile, narrower, with stipe 2/5 the length, scales with long hair-teeth, conspicuous and abundant among the sporangia; spores with very short tubercles.

Discussion:

Acrostichum engelii Karsten, Fl. Columb. 1: 118, t. 59. 1860. Type. “Colombia, cordillera Meridensis.” Karsten s.n. (B?). This species is commonly mistaken for E. muscosum. See comments under that species for distinguishing features.
