Description:
Species Description - Rhizome long-creeping, ca. 1 mm diam.; rhizome scales ovate to linear-lanceolate, dull orange, peltate, entire, 3-6 mm long; phyllopodia lacking; fronds distant, 5-8 cm long, 1.2-1.6 cm wide; stipe slender, ca. ½ the frond length, moderately clothed with ovate, dull orange scales, 23 mm long; blade ovate-lanceolate or spathulate, chartaceous, apex obtuse, base broadly cuneate; veins obscure, free, simple or once-forked, ca. 1 mm apart, at 60-70° degree angle; hydathodes lacking; blade scales sparse, small, inconspicuous, 1-2 mm long, linear, often coarsely and irregularly toothed, especially toward the scale base, more frequent on the lower surface; fertile fronds as tall or slightly taller than the sterile fronds, with longer stipe, ca. ¾ the length, blade spathulate, smaller than the sterile with a few scales along the abaxial midvein but lacking among the sporangia; spores with broad, low, ridges and abundant spicules covering all surfaces.

Discussion:
Acrostichum squamipes Hooker, Icon. pl. 2: t. 197. 1837. Type. Peru. Chacapoyas, Mathews s.n. (K!). Acrostichum ovatum Liebmann, Mexic. bregn. 164 (seors. 12). 1849, nom. illeg., non Hooker &Greville, 1829. Elaphoglossum subaequale Moore, Index fil. 368. 1862. Type. Mexico. Oaxaca: Cerro Zempoaltépetl, Liebmann [Pl. Mex. 2431, Fl. Mex. 5] (C!; isotypes K!, US!). Elaphoglossum squamipes represents a distinct group with long-creeping rhizomes and broad, pale rhizome and stipe scales. It is very closely related to Peltapteris, which could justifiably be placed in Elaphoglossum, differing from E. squamipes et aff. only in frond dissection.
