Description:

Species Description - Rhizome short-creeping, to 9 mm diam.; rhizome scales linear-lanceolate, reddish-orange, to 12 mm long, with short teeth; phyllopodia lacking; fronds clumped, 10-57 cm long, 1.2-4 cm wide; stipe ¼-½ the frond length, with scales reddish-orange, spreading, subulate, slightly toothed, to 4 mm long; blade linear-lanceolate, chartaceous, apex acuminate, base rounded, truncate, or broadly cuneate; veins distinct, free, simple or once-forked, 1.5-2.5 mm apart, at 60-70° angle; hydathodes evident; blade scales abundant, reddish-orange, subulate, slightly toothed, more dense at margin, spreading to 5-6 mm long, usually less scaly on the upper surface; fertile fronds slightly shorter than the sterile, to 38 cm long, 2.5 cm wide, with longer stipe (ca. ¾ the fertile frond length), apex acute, base subcordate, scales lacking on lower surface; spores densely echinate, lacking ridges or crests.

Discussion:

Type. Haiti. Croix-des-Bouquets, Badeau, Ekman 7708 (BM!). This species closely resembles E. villosum (Swartz) J. Smith of the West Indies, but is distinct from it in that E. villosum has scales among the sporangia and the blade has a caudate apex and narrowly cuneate base.
