Dryopteridaceae
Description:
Latin Diagnosis - Affine E. affini sed frondibus majoribus et stipitis paleis apice nigris differt. (Named in honor of my life-long friend, Dr. Andre F. Clewell, who accompanied the senior author on his first visit to Oaxaca in 1960.)
Species Description - Rhizome creeping, 4-6 mm diam.; rhizome scales ovate-lanceolate, tan, 5-7 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, entire; phyllopodia distinct, 2-3 cm long; fronds 0.5-1 cm apart, 27-29(-47) cm long; stipe ca. ½ the frond length, with scales at base ovate to ovate-deltate, 2-4 mm wide, tan, subentire, some with dark, sclerotic tip; blade narrowly elliptic, 2.8-4.3 cm wide, coriaceous, apex acute, base cuneate; blade glabrous above, glabrous below except for minute (0.1 mm) round to stellate dots; veins indistinct, ca. 1 mm apart, forked, at ca. 75° angle; hydathodes lacking; fertile fronds linear-oblanceolate, apex acute, 1.8-2.0 cm wide, ca. equaling sterile frond in stipe and blade length; spores reticulate-cristate.

Discussion:
Type. Mexico. Oaxaca: Dist. Centro, N slope of Cerro San Felipe, moist pine-oak woods, 7800-8400' [2380-2560 m], 13 Oct 1969, Mickel 4034 (NY!). Elaphoglossum clewellianum is superficially most like E. sartorii in frond size and shape, but is actually closer to E. affine as evidenced by the broader, ovate, rhizome scales with black tips on the scales of the stipe base.
