Description:
by: A. Vasco, J.T. MIckel , and R.C. Moran
TYPE: Peru. Amazonas: Chacapoyas, [6°13’S, 77°51’W], 1836, Mathews s.n. (holotype, K!; probable isotype, NY!)
Description: Rhizome 1–2 mm wide; rhizome scales 3–4.5 mm long, ovate to linear-lanceolate, dull, pale orange, entire; sterile leaves 4.5–16.5 cm long; petioles 0.75-2.2 times as long as the laminae, the scales 2–3 mm long, ovate to narrowly lanceolate, dull, tan to pale orange, entire or occasionally with marginal processes at the base; laminae 3–12.5 × 0.8–2 cm, 1.8–2.5(–4) times longer than wide, ovate-lanceolate or spathulate, entire to occasionally (especially in small leaves) minutely crenulate, apices obtuse, base broadly cuneate; abaxial lamina with scales 0.5–2.5 mm long, linear, tan to brown, often darkened at point of attachment and centrally, linear to hastate, often coarsely and irregularly toothed especially toward the base; adaxial lamina with scales like those of the lower surface; fertile leaves 3.2–12.5 cm long; petioles 2.8–4.5 times as long as the laminae; laminae 0.7–2.5 × 0.5–1.1 cm long, ovate to elliptic, entire, obtuse, the base slightly cordate to short-decurrent; intersporangial scales 1-2 mm long, tan to dark brown, marginal processes occasionally present.
Distribution: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and southeastern Brazil; (800–)1700–3800 m.
Comments: Although absent from the Antilles, Elaphoglossum squamipes is one of the most widespread species in the genus. It is characterized by petioles 0.7-2.2 times longer than the laminae, and laminae lanceolate to elliptic with obtuse apices. Compared to E. andreanum, E. squamipes is larger with more lanceolate or elliptic laminae (vs. elongate-deltate) and tan or brown scales (vs. mainly dark brown). Although not constant, most specimens of E. andreanum differ from E. squamipes by laminae minutely crenulate with darker brown scales. From E. lloense, E. squamipes differs by smaller leaves, narrower laminae, and obtuse lamina apices. Elaphoglossum minutum might be confused with E. squamipes, but it differs by presence at lower elevations (100–1000(–1700) m) and more oblong, often parallel-sided laminae. Some specimens of E. lloense approach E. squamipes, but its more long-attenuate lamina apices can usually distinguish the latter species. Our unpublished molecular phylogenetic studies resolved the Brazilian specimens of E. squamipes forming a clade distinct from plants from elsewhere. We cannot, however, find any morphological characters to distinguish the two clades and therefore recognized the Brazilian and non-Brazilian plants as the same species. If the Brazilian plants were recognized as distinct, the name E. craspedariiforme would apply.
