Species Description - Rhizome decumbent or ascending, 3-6 mm thick (excluding scales and stipe bases), densely clothed at apex with thin, light orange-brown, lance-attenuate scales 3-6 mm long, these hair-pointed and with margins denticulate to subentire. Sterile fronds loosely clustered, suberect or spreading, 15-25(-3 7) cm long; stipes slender, shorter than the blades (or rarely exceeding them), 5-7.5(-15) cm long, pale greenish or straw-colored, beset—chiefly toward the base—with light orange-brown, hairlike scales to 5 mm long, these with swollen buUate-inrolled base attached to stipe by a minute black stalk, the scales deciduous, when falling leaving the stalk as a permanent black dot on the stipe; phyllopodia not evident; blades narrowly and somewhat irregularly elliptic or elliptic-oblong, mostly 9-20(-25) cm long, 1.5-2.5(-4) cm broad, bluntly acuminate (rarely minutely retuse) at apex, cuneate and very narrowly decurrent at base; veins widely spaced, simple or once-forked, terminating 0.5-1.5 mm short ofthe slightly wavy-sinuate margins; tissue thinly herbaceous, light green, translucent, sparsely clothed at first with small, appressed, hairlike scales chiefly on abaxial side, these soon falling, leaving the surfaces naked. Fertile fronds much smaller than the sterile ones but with longer stipes and lanceolate blades.
