  • Notes

Entered Jan 2024. Mardin Artuklu University Herbarium aims to detect, document, and collect all plant samples, including common, rare, endemic, food, ornamental, medicinal, and poisonous plant taxa, to preserve the plant diversity database of Mardin province. Mardin province has a rich biodiversity due to the presence of Mediterranean, continental, and desert climates and the altitude between the mountain and the plain parts. Mardin province and its surroundings are among the ancient locations that have been adopted by humanity since the earliest periods of history. The fossil records show the use of plants dates to the Middle Palaeolithic period, approximately 60 000 years ago. Eight different plant species were identified on a human corpse found in 1960 in the Shanidar cave, which is very close to the province of Mardin. However, the historically rich plant biodiversity of Mardin province is under threat due to various reasons, such as the unconscious use of pesticides, the construction of dams and ponds, excessive and uncontrolled grazing, concretion and destruction of green areas, and industrial facilities. Therefore, documentation of floristic composition and preserving dried plant samples grown in Mardin province have significant importance in terms of biodiversity and plant conservation.
