  • Notes

Entered Mar 2016. The Oman Botanic Garden, a unique project not only within Oman but the entire Arabian Peninsula, is currently under construction. It aims to present and showcase the native flora and habitats of the country to visitors and offers student, researchers and other botanic gardens (national and international) modern facilities and expertise in a state of the art research centre. The OBG herbarium will be a major focus of the research centre. The herbarium is currently working closely with researchers from within Oman (e.g. Sultan Qaboos University) and international research institutions (e.g. Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh). Oman’s native flora consists of approximately 1408 species, distributed within highly diverse habitats throughout the country. Remote and inaccessible areas of the country have yet to be studied. There is a relatively high possibility that new plant records will be discovered during the course of OBG’s field collecting trips. Although we are at the beginning of a large task, the OBG herbarium collection is constantly growing and aims at increasing our specimen numbers vastly within the next two to three years. On our many field trips throughout Oman, collecting herbarium vouchers is of critical importance. Of nearly all the species collected so far, multiple vouchers are available. The wide range of morphological variation within and between Oman’s diverse habitats is captured for many of the species. Vouchers of rare and endemic species are included in our collection as well. In Oman, we are so far the only herbarium/institution that regularly undertakes scientific curation and physical curation inspections by trained staff and documents all procedures
