Notes
The Northwestern University in the Philippines is a pioneering academic institution in the Northern Luzon geared in conserving the natural heritage of the country. The northwestern Luzon is home to numerous endemic plants species and cannot be found elsewhere in the world, despite is harsh climatic condition, natural calamities and human exploitation that aggravated the degradation of natural plant habitats. The Philippines is among the Megadiversity countries in the world yet among the most critically endangered, placing it as a hotspot for conservation. The university established its botanic gardens to perform the international agenda of botanic gardens in conservation and to halt the loss of species in our region. The herbarium Includes 2,200 species of living plant collections at the Systematic Gardens with 226 Families and 124 subfamilies of the kingdom Plantae. The living plant collection and herbarium collections are extensively used for plant taxonomy (APG III). Top universities in Manila (University of the Philippines Diliman, University of the Philippines Manila, University of Santo Tomas and the De La Salle University Dasmarinas Cavite) annually conduct taxonomy courses in the botanic gardens which is arranged according to family and in their latest phylogenetic treatment The specimens are also sent to the different botanical institutions around the world for DNA barcoding and genomics. All specimens are newly acquired and collected in the wild to represent Flora of the Island Luzon, Philippines.
