    Entered Feb 2014. The herbarium moved from Johannesburg to Nelspruit area during 1998. The herbarium building, which incorporates the library and an annex for mounting and freezing of specimens at Whyte Thorne, was inaugurated in Feb 2001. The herbarium has been privately owned and funded from inception in 1967. The Herbarium, Library and Garden are open to all bona-fide botanically motivated persons. Whyte Thorne Botanic Garden has been developed on the same property, consisting of 23 hectares of which six acres comprise the laid –out garden and nursery including a 900sq m shade house & 34sq m propagation house. WTBG is a privately sponsored botanic Garden with 8300 living plant accessions, 6500 living plant orchid accessions and 11990 seed accessions. Accession numbers are cross-referenced to herbarium material where appropriate. D. McMurtry collecting numbers currently stand at 15200 of which ±7500 pressed specimens are lodged at the Johannesburg Botanic Garden Herbarium, the rest in HSMC. Duplicates in PRE and BNRH. Specimens mostly from the four northern provinces of S.Af. but include Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, St Helena, Reunion, Madagascar and Comores . Carpological Spirit material (mostly Orchidaceae) collections maintained.
