Notes
Updated Nov 2017. The herbarium was presented to Stonyhurst College in 1898 by James Ward’s son, also James (educated at Stonyhurst from 1860 onwards). The notes relating to the gift state that James Ward began collecting for his British herbarium in 1825, and by 1871 had amassed 1,753 specimens. There is a second herbarium described as ‘Exotic’ which features specimens from Ireland and Switzerland, these last were collected in 1864. The Exotic Herbarium is described as being of the same size as the British. They are described using the Linnaean system. The collection is housed separately from the other Scientific collections, and is in the same folders and order as when it was donated in c1898. It has, to the best of my knowledge, never been examined by specialists and there is no catalogue or database of the Herbarium.
