  • Notes

The Herbarium of the department of Botany, Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ananthapuramu (formerly Anantapur) with an acronym ‘SKU’ is the largest herbarium in Andhra Pradesh and the second largest in South Indian Universities. It was started in 1983 by Prof. T. Pullaiah and later from 1996 onwards Dr. B. Ravi Prasad Rao is the in-charge for SKU. SKU houses about 41,000+ specimens collected during 1983-2023 from different parts of states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and other states of Southern Peninsular India and Andaman Islands. These specimens represent different plant groups: algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. There are 17 type specimens in SKU. All the specimens are preserved by dry and wet method using rectified spirit and mercuric chloride and guaranteed to exist without any damage for about a century. Duplicates of these specimens as well field notes are being maintained separately in the herbarium store room. Chief contributors are Prof. T. Pullaiah team (about 11,000 specimens) Prof. R.R. Venkata Raju (3000) and Prof. B. Ravi Prasad Rao team (about 26,000). Most of the collections are made with the support of national funding agency supported research projects like UGC, DST, CSIR and DBT. About 20,000 specimens are collected from Eastern Ghats and 3500 from Andaman Islands. Specimens are arranged in specially designed cupboards following Bentham and Hookers classification with modifications after Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification (APG IV, 2016) . Prof. B. Ravi Prasad Rao is the Director of the herbarium and can be contacted at biodiversityravi@gmail.com for more information.
