  • Notes

The Herbarium Hyderabadensis (HY), being established in the year 1930, is housed at the Department of Botany, Osmania University, Hyderabad, Telangana state, India. It holds approximately 8000 specimens, collected from all around the world. The Herbarium Hyderabadensis (HY) derives its name from the existing locale called Hyderabad, Deccan. It was recognised as one of Asian and international Herbaria (Index Herbariorum: http://sweetgum.nybg.org/science/ih/herbarium-details/?irn=125627). The collections are maintained under high quality standards for its standing. As it is in vogue for Indian (Commonwealth) herbaria, the specimens are arranged as per the system of classification of Bentham & Hooker (1862‒1883). The re-arrangement of specimens as per LAPG (2009) and APG IV is on the way. The Accession Register of HY includes the name of the plant, plant collector and the date of collection, habitat (nation, state/region, district, place, etc. HY has successfully documented the flora of the erstwhile state of Andhra Pradesh (now it is segregated into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in 2014). The specimens at HY enable one for preparing/developing interactive identifications key for the Angiosperms of the two states (habitat-wise) and as per growth forms (trees, shrubs, climbers and herbs). The herbarium collections are added actively at the rate of 500‒1000 specimens per year on the average.
