Definition
The area between the calycine ring and the line of opercular dehiscence in a dehiscent-fruited Lecythidaceae.

Notes
The use of the size of this zone has been considered a a key taxonomic feature in the past. It is, however, variable and has led to a profusion of species names. See Dugand (1947) for a discussion of fruit varation in Lecythis minor.
