Septum (pl. = septa)

  • Title

    Septum (pl. = septa)

  • Definition

A wall-like partition of a locule of an ovary that divides the ovary into chambers called locules. The septae are made up of the walls of adjacent carpels

  • Notes

In neotropical Lecythidaceae, the septa, as viewed in a medial longitudinal section of the ovary, are articulate. That part of the septum above the articulation is called the upper septum and that part below is called the lower septum. The placentae develop on the lower septum while the upper septum develops into the columella of the fruit in most dehiscent-fruited species. The lower and the upper septum are always divided by a septal articulation although that might not be too apparent in some sections.
