Field notebook
Creator(s): S. A. Mori
Description: A large notebook has the advantage of allowing more collections to be registered but this advantage is all that it has. After considerable use, it starts falling apart and has to be bound again. The smaller notebook is waterproof and can be carried in a pouch on the collector's belt. This notebook can be found online by searching for the "Rite in the Rain" All-Weather Journal No. 390. Notes should be taken with a pencil and the number of the specimen should be written on the newspaper with an indelible marker.
Rights: Rights reside with creator, otherwise property of NYBG.

Definition
A notebook in which the data to be used for making plant labels are recorded. Today, the principal purpose of a field notebook is for providing the data for entering into a database. The labels are then generated directly from the database. A field notebook serves as a permanent record of the collections a collector makes throughout his or her career. The authors prefer a notebook that resists rain such as the "Rite in the Rain" all-weather Jounal, No. 390F."
