Slash

  • Title

    Slash

  • Definition

A slanted cut through the outer and inner barks that reveals characters useful in tree identification.

  • Notes

Slash and blaze are synonyms but the first is the preferred term. The relative thickness between the inner and outer barks, a red line between the inner and outer barks, and the color and streaking of the inner bark are helpful in identifying species in neotropical Lecythidaceae. We have not, however, discovered consitent differences among genera.
