Description: Photosynthesis uses the energy from sunlight to manufacture carbohydrates from water and carbon dioxide while respiration derives energy from the oxidation of carbohydrates and, as a result, carbon dioxide is released. The inset shows a mycorrhizal fungus oxidizing photosynthate produced by the tree.
