  • Description

    A scandent looping lofty tree climber. Stems hard, terete, green, 1½ inch h thick, nodulose every 2 feet, looping; branches long and many branched, overtopping large trees, or hanging aloof from them, tough; leaves dark green on both sides, usually at the ends of the twigs, fiat, somewhat descending, chartaceous, arranged along distichous rows; twigs radially spreading, 6 inches to 3 feet long, crowded from the joints of the branchlets, unbranched; fertile branches long and drooping, more numerously branched, brownish from a distance, the ultimate branchlets in the flowering state much curved, straighter in the fruiting stage, glumes reddish toward the tip, greenish otherwise; fruits or seeds green, amply subtended by the brown dry scales or glumes.     This is quite common in the forests everywhere and produced ample water for drinking and litte cookin; the water is clear and has good taste. Very much relished or desire when no river or creek is accesible.
