To improve aim while hunting with either blowguns or shotguns. They also believe it increase their lung capacity and thus their effectiveness to hunt with blowguns. This species is used independently as a hallucinogen or added to ayahuasca mixtures. Schultes and Raffauf (1990) cite many uses of this species including treatment of fever, rheumatism, snake bites, syphilis, and yellow fever. The plant is also employed as a abortifacient, diuretic and fish poison.
