    Species Description - Caespitose perennials; culms 20-45 cm tall, erect. Leaves mostly 15-40 X 0.3-0.6 cm. Inflorescences of 5-11 rays; involucral bracts 6-8, the longest 16-40 X 0.2-0.5 cm, ± horizontal, the longest rays mostly to 2.5 cm long (rarely absent and then the inflorescence a dense head 2-3 cm wide), the secondary rays, if present, to 10 mm long; spikes 7-10 X 5-8 mm; spikelets ca. 50-100, ovate, 1.9-4 X 1.2-2.2 mm, the scales 1-1.5 mm long. Stamen 1. Achenes trigonous, narrowly ellipsoid, 0.8-1.1 X 0.2-0.3 mm, dark brown, ± smooth.
