    Species Description - Plants dull, pale-green, whitish, or reddish-green in soft tufts. Stems 4-15 mm high, unbranched when sterile. Leaves erect- or ± wide-spreading, 0.7-1.4 mm long and 0.4-0.7 mm wide, narrowly to broadly lanceolate, acute, ± decurrent; margins plane, serrate to serrulate near the apex; costa ending 3-6 cells below the apex; upper cells ± lax and thin-walled, broadly rhomboidal, 55-120µm long and 12-24 µm wide, somewhat narrower at the margin. Dioicous. Perigonia terminal on simple stems, conspicuous; outer bracts broadly acute, + wide-spreading. Perichaetia terminal on simple or innovating stems; bracts lanceolate, up to about 2.5 mm long, lax-celled. Setae short to long, fairly stout; capsules inclined ± 180°, 1-2 mm long, shortly pyriform to urceolate, short-necked; operculum come, acute; exothecial cells ± isodiametric, with sinuose, evenly thickened to ± collenchymatous walls; stomata immersed; exostome teeth lanceolate, long-acute, brown to red-brown, ± coarsely papillose near the apex, more so below, strongly bordered, trabeculate; endostome hyaline to yellow, the basal membrane more than 1/2 the height of the exostome, segments keeled and broadly perforate, cilia mostly long, nodulose. Spores 15-20 µm, finely papillose.

    Pohlia wahlenbergii, known by dull, whitish or more often pink-tinged leaves with cells 13 µm wide or more, attains its most luxuriant growth in more northerly latitudes. The Mexican plants are small by comparison. All specimens from Mexico and Central America are sterile.

    On calcareous, generally clayey soil along streams or on moist ditch banks at roadsides from low to high altitudes. Baja California and Oaxaca.-Wide spread in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres but infrequent in Mexico and Central America.
