    Species Description - Stems 10-30 mm high. Leaves imbricate to somewhat contorted when dry, erect-spreading to squarrose-recurved when moist, keeled, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 2-3.3 mm long, exclusive of a smooth or weakly denticulate hair point varying from very short to 1.2, rarely 2 mm long; margins recurved on 1 or both sides, bistratose, or sometimes thicker in 1-3 rows; costa percurrent, prominent at back, with about 4 ventral guide cells (or rarely more) below the middle, and ventral walls often strongly thickened, on the dorsal side with 3-4 layers of small, thick-walled cells; cells unistratose or partly bistratose, quadrate to rounded or irregular, 7-9 µm, thick-walled and somewhat sinuose, becoming longer and more sinuose at midleaf and below; basal cells rectangular, 4-5:1 or sometimes shorter, thick-walled and usually distinctly sinuose, those in 1-2 marginal rows shorter, ± hyaline and thinner-walled. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves similar to upper stem leaves. Setae 3-5 mm long, arcuate; capsules exserted, horizontal or pendent, 1-1.5 mm long, ovoid to cylindric, usually plainly ribbed when dry; annulus deciduous, of about 4 rows of cells; operculum straight-rostrate; peristome teeth cleft to about the middle. Spores 8-13 µm, nearly smooth. Calyptrae mitrate.

    The plants are dioicous with keeled leaves ending in smooth hair points and bordered by thickened margins. The ribbed capsules are exserted on curved setae.
