Description
Species Description - Plants in dense, green tufts 1-6 cm high. Leaves (1.5-) 2.5-4.5 mm long. Setae 8-18 mm long, usually red or reddish-brown (but sometimes yellowish). Capsules 1-2 mm long, erect, cylindric, brown; peristome teeth equidistant, split or perforated nearly to the base into 2 ± equal divisions, finely papillose-roughened or nearly smooth except for faint, oblique striolations. Spores 16-25 µm, densely and finely papillose-roughened.

The distichous leaves have shiny-white bases and spreading, rough subulae, and the cylindric capsules are erect or sometimes slightly inclined.

A calciphile in rocky habitats at fairly high montane elevations; Coahuila, Distrito Federal, Jalisco, Nuevo Leon—Mexico to Patagonia; Alaska to Greenland and south in the mountains of the West to Arizona and New Mexico and in me East to New England and the Great Lakes region; northern and central Europe and Asia; Japan; New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand
