  • Description

    Species Description - Herbaceous twining vine to 5 m long, producing abundant milky sap; stems cylindrical, slender, glabrous. Leaf blades 6-11 x 4-8 cm, chartaceous, ovate or 3-lobed, the apex acute or shortly acuminate, the base cordate, the margins entire; petioles slender, as long or longer than the blades. Flowers in simple dichasia or solitary on long, axillary peduncles; bracts lanceolate, 1.8-2 cm long. Calyx light green, 15-18 mm long, the sepals subequal, lanceolate, with long-acuminate apex; corolla funnelshaped, reddish violet with darker tube within, 5-7 cm long, with 5 obtuse rounded lobes; stamens included; stigmas white, barely exposed. Capsule globose, 10-15 mm diam. Seeds black, smooth with tuft of short hairs at base.

    Not common, found in open, disturbed areas near the coast. Along trail to Brown Bay (A4127); Johnson Bay (A4666), Maho Bay Camp (A4051). Also on St. Croix, St. Thomas, and Tortola; throughout tropical America.
