    Species Description - Differs from A. microphylla by: plants elongate, pinnately branched, frequently 2–6 cm long; dorsal (upper, photosynthetic) leaves larger, to 1 mm long, more prominently papillose, papillae 1-celled; megaspores warty with raised angular bumps, with relatively sparse filamentous hairs on the surface.

    Azolla caroliniana Willd., Sp. Pl., ed. 4, 5(1): 541. 1810. Type. “Habitat in aquis Carolinae.” Richard s.n. (B-Willd. 20260!). A synonym of A. filiculoides according to Dunham, as reported by Jermy in Derrick et al., 1987.
