    Species Description - Shrub to 2.5 m tall, young shoots puberulous. Leaf blade oblanceolate or narrowly oblanceolate, 16-42 (-55) x 5-11 (-14) cm, coriaceous or cartilaginous, 0.2-0.26 mm thick, glabrous, base attenuate, apex acute or rarely obtuse, margins entire or faintly serrulate, lateral veins rather inconspicuous, surfaces between veinlets smooth or rarely very sparsely striate; extraxylary sclerenchyma mostly lacking, rarely present as very sparse and thin bundles adjacent to epidermis, hypoderm present adaxially, 1-layered, often discontinuous; petiole 1-3 cm long, 1.3-2.7 mm thick, puberulous at base. Racemes in bisexual plants to 30 cm long with 10-40 flowers, in female plants to 8 cm long with 10-20 flowers, plants with male flowers not seen; rachis 0.5-1.5 mm thick, puberulous to sub-glabrous; pedicels 1.5-3.5 mm long; bracts 0.7-1.2 mm long, inserted at nodes. Flowers 5-merous; calyx lobes very broadly ovate, 1.5-2.5 x 1.7-2.5 mm, glabrous; corolla orange, tube 1.5-2.5 mm long, lobes 3-4 x 3-4.5 mm. Stamen filaments glabrous, in bisexual flowers fused into a tube 1-1.5 mm long, in pistillate flowers free, ca. 0.7 mm long. Pistil narrowly to broadly ovoid; stigma subcapitate, entire; ovules in bisexual flowers 1-12(-16), arranged in 1-3 rows, in pistillate flowers 10-15 in 2 or 3 rows. Fruits orange, 1.2-3 cm diam., pericarp 0.3-0.4 mm thick, surface smooth or rarely faintly papillose; seeds 1-5, 7-9(-12) mm long.

    Distribution and Ecology - S tropical South America from N Bolivia and S Brazil to N Paraguay (Fig. 30) in evergreen or semievergreen, seasonally dry forest and gallery forest from near sea level to 1000 m. Flowering Jan-Jul, occasionally in other months; fruiting throughout most of year (no records May and Oct).
