    Species Description - Rhizomatous, colonial, sparingly branched shrubs 2–12 dm, strongly canescent, or the stems often subglabrous; lvs oblanceolate or spatulate, entire or spinose-denticulate, mucronate, 2–7 cm × 3–25 mm; heads solitary or several, the disk 1–1.5 cm wide; invol bracts canescent, the outer ovate and somewhat spreading, the inner less hairy, more appressed, becoming shortly spine-tipped like those of the receptacle; rays ca 13, to 1 cm; 2n=28. Seacoast, especially in salt marshes; Va. to Fla., Tex., and Mex.; Bermuda. Mar.–Oct.
