Species Description - Stems 3–7 dm; lvs lanceolate or lance-oblong, 6–12 × 2–4 cm, acuminate, serrate, obtuse or broadly cuneate at base, on distinct petioles 5–15 mm; cor 2.5–3.5 cm, purple or red-purple throughout, with a white or yellowish beard; staminode white or nearly so. Wet woods on the coastal plain; Md. to Ala.; also Ind. to s. Minn. and Ark. Aug.–Oct.
