    Species Description - Lax, short-hairy, apparently annual, to 15 cm, often several- stemmed; basal lvs spatulate or broader, to 4 × 1.5 cm, irregularly toothed; cauline lvs often smaller; raceme longer at maturity than the proper stem, openly 4–10-fld; cal 4–5 mm at anthesis, to 9 mm in fr; cor 7–10 mm, blue-violet, marked with yellow and white; 2n=16–52. Lawns and wet bottomlands; native of e. Asia, widely but sparingly intr. in our range. May–Nov. (M. japonicus)
