Discussion
This collection (a very good one) does not expand the known area of the species, but rather confirms the distribution of B. tomentosa, which is concentrated in the upper Cauca Valley, from Popayan to Almaguer and Pasto, and in the Western Cordillera from Carpinterías to Volcan Gualcalá. More specimens of the type collection have been recently examined and all match with the holotype and with the collections at hand from the Popayan area. The Mutis herbarium specimens also agree perfectly with the type collection, an indication that they could have been collected by Caldas. With respect to Asplund 17162, Pichincha-Ecuador, quoted as being B. tomentosa (Cuatrecasas, 1970, p. 174), I have had second thoughts; the few specimens seen have apparently opposite leaves, and other small differences. Until more complete specimens from Ecuador are available, we cannot ascertain which is the species in question from Chiriboga.
