Description
Species Description - Biennial or perennial; stems often clustered, simple or branched, 1–4 dm; basal lvs oblong-obovate or obovate, 2–5 cm, obtuse or rounded, the cauline progressively narrower, becoming oblanceolate, 1.5–3 cm; stems and branches terminating in a lfless peduncle 3–10 cm, with a dense terminal head-like raceme 1–3 cm × 10–18 mm; fls orange, drying yellow; wings abruptly cuspidate, 5–7 mm, equaling the cor; fr obovate; seeds short-hairy; aril nearly as long as the seed; 2n=64, 68. Sandy acid swamps and bogs of the coastal plain; L.I. to Fla. and La. June–Aug. (Pilostaxis l.)
