    Species Description - Slender, taprooted annual 1-5 dm, branched above, sparsely strigose or glandular-puberulent to subglabrous; basal lvs ovate to obovate or narrowly elliptic, 1-2(-4) cm, short-petiolate; cauline lvs numerous, crowded, linear-filiform, 1-4 cm, less than 1 mm wide; fls diurnal, autogamous, in well developed plants numerous, forming a long terminal raceme, individually subtended by deltoid bracts 1-2 mm; hypanthium 1-3 mm; pet 3-5 mm; filaments short, alternately unequal; anthers 0.5-1 mm; style 1-4 mm; fr sessile or short-stipitate, 4-7(-10) mm, ellipsoid- rhomboid, with tapering base, strongly 4-angled but scarcely winged; 2n=14. Rock ledges and sandy barrens; Mo. and se. Kans. to e. Tex., e. to w. Fla., Ga., Tenn., Ky., and rarely N.C. Apr.-June. (Peniophyllum l.)
