    Species Description - Perennial; stems rather woody, commonly branched from the base, spreading or ascending, 2–5 dm; lvs oblong to oblanceolate, 1–2(–3) cm, entire or shallowly sinuate-denticulate, densely canescent-strigose; fls usually few, sessile in the upper axils, not forming a distinct spike, or occasionally in a spike 1–2 dm; hypanthium and ovary hirsute, the hypanthium 2–3 cm; sep 8–12 mm, separately reflexed; pet 1 cm; fr linear, 2–3 cm, usually curved; seeds dark brown, obovoid or fusiform, obscurely pitted; 2n=14. Sand-dunes and beaches along the coast; N.J. to La. June, July. (Raimannia h.) Possibly hybridizes with no. 8 [Oenothera laciniata Hill].
