Description
Species Description - Shrub or small tree to 10(–30) m; lvs oblong or elliptic to oblong- obovate, acute or acuminate, finely serrulate, becoming 10–15 cm after anthesis; fls in clusters of 2–5, on slender pedicels 1–2 cm; cor opening before maturity, at anthesis 2–2.5 cm; fr 2.5–3.5 cm, 4-winged; 2n=24. Rich, moist woods; w. Va. to s. O. and s. Ill., s. to Fla. and e. Tex. Apr., May. (? H. carolina L., an earlier name, perhaps misapplied)
