Description
Species Description - Shrub 1–4 m; lvs oblong to oblanceolate or obovate, 3–8 cm, acute or short-acuminate, finely serrulate; petioles 1–3 mm; racemes secund, 3 cm or more, mostly terminating lfless branches of the previous year, soon surpassed by leafy shoots; pedicels 2–3 mm, thickened distally; sep lanceolate, acute, 2–3 mm; cor 7–9 mm; anthers 4-awned, fr 4 mm thick, not lobed; seeds shaped like a section of an orange. Woods and barrens in moist acid soil, chiefly on the coastal plain; e. Mass. to Fla. and La. May, June. (Leucothoë r.)
