    Type. Grijpma sn (neotype, U), Monteverde, ca 30 km W of Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; in coastal plain, on clayey soil, 15 m above sea-level. A neotype is selected here since the holotype: Scherzer sn from Puntarenas, Costa Rica, was destroyed at Berlin in 1943.

  • Description

    Description - Upper side of leaves and appendages of bracts scabrid by the thickened bases of appressed hairs. Size of pollen 114-125 µ. Exine 2-3 µ thick. Porus diam 14-21 µ. Number of pores 7-8 (von Wedel 1632 from Panama).

  • Distribution

    Central America, from Nicaragua to Panama, and a few collections from Colombia and Ecuador. In low thickets, open forests, swamps, or along streams, from sea-level to 1000 m.
