    Species Description - Erect shrub 3–8(–10) dm; lvs firm, articulate at the slightly clasping base, elliptic-oblong, 1.5–3.5 cm × 7–15 mm, rounded above; fls distinctly pediceled (3–10 mm) above the subulate or lanceolate bracteoles; sep 4, the 2 outer broadly round-ovate or subrotund, 10–18 mm, subcordate at base, 6–7-nerved, the 2 inner narrowly lanceolate, two-thirds as long; pet 4, yellow, obliquely obovate, 12–18 mm; stamens numerous, the filaments distinct or weakly connate at base; styles 3(4), very short; fr unilocular, exserted from the persistent cal. Sandy soil; L.I. and N.J. to Fla., w. to s. Ky., e. Okla., and e. Tex. July, Aug. (Ascyrum s.)
