    Species Description - High-climbing woody vine; lvs ovate or ovate- oblong, to 15 cm, acute or acuminate, truncate or subcordate at base; lower spikes axillary, the upper forming a loose, leafless panicle; pedicels 5–10 mm, jointed at the lower third, dilated above; perianth 3–4 mm at anthesis; fr brown, 2.5–3.5 cm × 4–8 mm, corky, the coriaceous tep connivent; achene 8–10 mm, roundly trigonous below, sharply so toward the acuminate tip; 2n=48. Wet woods and margins of swamps on the coastal plain; s. Ill. and Mo. to S.C., Fla., and Tex. July. (? B. ovata (Walter) Shinners, an older but insufficiently identified name)
