Description
Variety Description - More strictly erect and more branching below; lvs ovate to broadly ovate, short-acuminate, doubly serrate, cordate or subcordate (seldom merely truncate) at base, ± pubescent beneath; fruiting catkins longer, avg 5 cm; pistillate scales 5.6–8.7 × 4–5.4 mm, the lateral lobes ascending, scarcely dilated, the middle lobe somewhat prolonged and oblong; frs 4.1–6.7 mm wide, the body 1.2–2 mm wide; 2n=48 (42, 56). Nf. and e. Que. to n. N.Y.; high Blue Ridge of N.C.; n. Minn. (B. cordifolia)
