    Species Description - Rhizomes slender, bright yellow; lfls 3, subsessile, crenate or lobulate with mostly mucronate teeth, the middle lfl cuneate-obovate, the others inequilateral, broadly rounded on the lower side; peduncle 1-fld, 5–15 cm; fls white, 12–16 mm wide; follicles (style included) 8–13 mm; 2n=18. Damp, mossy woods and bogs; Greenl. to Alas. and e. Asia, s. to N.J., N.C., n. Ind., Io., and B.C. The e. Amer. plants are segregated on minor characters as var. groenlandica (Oeder) Fassett.
