    Species Description - Tree to 15 m; twigs tomentose; winter terminal bud 3–5 cm, tomentose; lvs deciduous, thin, obovate or pandurate, very large, mostly 5–10 dm, acute or obtuse, concavely narrowed from above the middle to a broad base that is prolonged into short, broadly rounded basal lobes, the lower surface strongly glaucous and finely hairy; fls fragrant; pet 6, elliptic to elliptic-obovate, 12–18 × 4–9 cm, white with a rosy basal spot; style thick, persisting as a beak on the tomentose follicle; fr-cone globose or ovoid, 5–10 cm thick; 2n=38. Rich woods, chiefly in the mts.; Appalachian region from Va., Ky., and s. O. to n. Ga., w. to Ark. and La. May, June.
