  • Discussion

TYPE: none cited. LECTOTYPE, designated here: COLOMBIA. W. Andes above Cali, Lehmann 6929 (LE, photo of LE at MO)

Pleurothallis praegrandis Ames, Sched. Orch. 5: 17. 1923, syn. nov. TYPE: PANAMA. Cana and vicinity, 6000 ft, 17 Apr to 8 Jun 1908, R. S. Wil- liams 973 (HOLOTYPE: NY!).

Pleurothallis saccata Ames, Sched. Orch. 4: 25. 1923, syn. nov. TYPE: COSTA RICA. Cascajal, C. H. Lankester K340 (HOLOTYPE: K!)

The lectotype is the only known specimen that was annotated by Kraenzlin as P. colossus. This species is amongst the largest of Pleurothallis, with a range including Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador (Luer, pers. comm.). Luer and I agree that this is the earliest name for the plants tra- ditionally referred to P. praegrandis Ames in Panama (Dressler, 1980) and P. saccata Ames in Costa Rica (Lankester, 1959).
