    Species Description - Stem 3–8 dm; lower 1–3 lvs narrowly lanceolate to linear-oblong, to 20 cm, rarely over 2 cm wide; upper several lvs much reduced; infl compact, narrow, cylindric, 3–12 × 3 cm; fls numerous, orange; sep broadly ovate to obovate, 3–5 mm; lateral pet oblong, shorter than the sep, lacerate or shortly fringed at the summit; lip oblong, long-fringed, 7–10 mm; spur 5–9 mm. Low moist meadows and damp pine woods, especially along the coastal plain, but also in the mts. southward; se. Mass.; L.I.; N.J. to Fla., La., and Tex., and inland to Ky., Tenn., and Ark. July, Aug. (Blephariglottis c.; Platanthera c.) A hybrid with no. 15 [Habenaria blephariglottis (Willd.) Hook.] is H. ×canbyi Ames. The Long Island plants differ in their light yellow fls.
